Strange Sights...

There is a hill you drive up when entering my neighborhood. I have driven up & down that hill several times a day in the past year. Today, I got an eyeful...

While driving down the hill on my way to tennis this morning, I passed a kid's playground which is also a very popular monkey hang out. (No, I'm not joking.) Balanced on the top bar of a chain link fence surrounding this park were 2 monkeys... ummmm... well... ahhhh... going at it! First time in the year I've lived here passing monkeys almost daily that I have had the displeasure of seeing that act of business. I could happily live the rest of my life without that image entering my eyesight ever again.

Then, when returning home after tennis, as I started ascending the hill, I caught sight of our neighborhood security guard relieving himself right next to a different fence. (Poor fences get so abused in my neighborhood!) Not trying to hide himself... not being discreet... out in full view of cars passing on either side. Once again, something I could happily live the rest of my life without seeing ever again!

Finally, as I was returning home from a grocery shopping trip this evening, I had to stop my car while climbing up the hill to wait for a rooster to cross the road in front of me. There are several jokes that could be made here, but I will refrain.

I'm excited for my parents to finally arrive tomorrow night so they too can experience all the fun & craziness that seems to surround my life! I love living in the Philippines! Life is certainly never dull!!

That is crazy. What stories you will have to tell for the rest of your life - and they are very interesting stories!

We used to live in KL (in a residential area at the edge of KL) where monkeys roamed freely.

One day, the maid forgot to close a window before she went away for the weekend -- my husband, the kiddies and I had left earlier for Singapore. When we got home, we found the poor maid who had returned a few minutes before we got back in tears, could barely tell us what happened. To our horror and shock, the inside of the house had been turned inside out, upside down; flower vases, lamps, decorative items, etc, etc. were either broken or thrown around. We knew that monkeys had been inside because there were monkey fecal drops all over.

It wasn't the first time -- the house had already been invaded by dozens of monkeys (no kidding they were dozens) while we were quietly watching TV in one of the rooms. Before we knew what was happening, the house had been looted of food and fruit they could get their hands on.

When my young son attempted to shoo away a tiny monkey, a couple of older monkeys got poised to attack him. It was a strange and scary experience.

What scared me more than anything was that they might become violent and bite the kiddies (fear of rabies). We were told by our neigbours not to panic when they invade the house - especially if they are in a large group - and to be calm, to avoid threatening gestures because they might become aggressive and could attack.

Speaking of an animal crossing the street, I had a similar experience years ago on the way to Baguio on the Natl expressway (I think that's what it's called), in other words, a very, very busy highway.

What do you know, a man was crossing the highway with his carabao/water buffalo. I kid thee not. It was one of the most hilarious sights I've ever seen...

OH NO!!! These monkeys are nasty little creatures! I have a friend here who has also had quite a problem with the monkeys around her home. They have come in her kitchen & taken her fruit out of the fruit bowl she keeps on her counter & table. One time, there was a monkey on her back deck looking into her glass door. Her youngest son, age 2, came running towards the door & that monkey jumped at the glass as if to attack the little boy. Thank goodness the door was solid glass! We haven't had any problems with them in our neighborhood, though. They seem to be more docile where I live. Still scary, nonetheless!

Too funny about the carabao!!
