Irresponsible!

On the way home from the gas station this afternoon, I was waiting at a red light next to a 4-door sedan with three young girls in it. These girls looked to be all around the age of 5 or younger. What irritated the heck out of me was that NOT A SINGLE ONE of these girls was buckled in a seatbelt! NOT A SINGLE ONE! And, to make it worse, they weren't even sitting! Two of the young girls were in the front seat. One was standing up with the back of her head against the front windshield. The other young girl in the front seat was sliding from the passenger side to the middle & back. And, the girl in the backseat was bouncing up & down on her knees. I couldn't believe this adult in the front seat was allowing this! (I'm assuming she was the mother of atleast one of the girls, but would a mother really allow that?!?!) I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, thinking maybe they were just going to the corner store. But, when the light turned green, she turned onto 14th street, which is a very busy street in this area. And, she kept going for a good distance. (Oh yeah... I watched her in my rearview mirror!) It just made me so angry that someone would deliberately put their own or someone else's kids in harm's way. Not only could she have been in a wreck, but had the airbag inflated (it was a newer car with a standard airbag), then those 2 young girls in the front seat would have been seriously injured. The woman driving was just so irresponsible in every way! I am truly in shock that she allowed that behavior to occur.

I think I would have been tempted to call the police...that is just too dangerous.

Isn't it amazing that the scene you described is how most cars full of children looked 30-35 years ago? We were all loose and unbuckled! These days we would never dream of letting our kids be unbuckled. Cody's mom tells about how he used to take naps on the dashboard as an infant! It's a miracle any of us have survived to have kids of our own.

Becky, the thought did cross my mind about how this was the norm several years ago. I remember going unbuckled myself. Thank goodness they changed the law about that! Now, if only someone would tell that lady!!

I am betting that lady is one of those people who says well I survived without a seatbelt. That really drives me crazy when people say well we did or did not do something (that does not seem appropriate) and we turned out fine. Well, you may have turned out fine but others did not that is why we have laws! Good grief.

nooooooo, we did not put Cody on the dashboard for naps! EEEKKK.......what we did was lay a pillow on the seat between us and he took naps there on a few car trips, which was minimal as an infant......then he graduated to the infant seat, which was marginally better, then to a car seat in the back after about 4 months I guess. But NO naps on the dashboard! I enjoy reading yur blog occasionally linked from Becky! carol
